Far Cry 6 is available to play for free until 7pm GMT on Sunday August 7th (12 pm PT/3 pm ET). Download it from Ubisoft Connect (the old Uplay) or the Epic Games store.
I have a strange relationship with recent Far Cry games. On one hand, I love the vibrant settings, the sense of freedom and exploration and how polished the gunplay feels. On the other hand, I know for a fact that there will come a point where I will be bored silly. I managed to play through all of Far Cry 3, before bouncing off Far Cry 4 halfway through (too much of the same), and completely skipped Far Cry 5.
Far Cry 6 is a game I’ve had on my wishlist simply as a result of wanting to test out how awesome it’d look on my new monitor, and for a bit of mindless fun. I was going to pick it up on discount, but this has gone one better. 48 hours to play, and then I can move on with my life (expected) or still pick it up on discount if I’m really enjoying it. Sounds a good deal.
To try and get a bit more enjoyment from it I’m going to increase the difficulty (something I recommend doing as a way to try and increase your enjoyment from games). The hope is this makes the stakes more real and pushes it slightly away from the overly arcadey feel of Far Crys 3 and beyond, and more towards the survival feel of Far Crys 1-2. I’m also going in with low expectations and no pressure. It’s fine if I don’t connect with this at all, but I’m going to do my best to come back with some nice things to say about it. An interesting challenge that one given how many people have dubbed this a 7/10 experience.
